Today, we met the Japanese students and they told us a little bit about themselves. Then we broke into our groups and worked on our projects a little but more. And of course we laughed and had a lot of fun but still got our work done. That is basically all we did today in class.

People's Republic of Capitalism Part 3

Today, in class we finished watching the 3rd video of the People's Republic of Capitalism. In China, 30 million cars are being made in one year. By the 2030, China is going to have more cars than the United States. The city of Cong Qing is the center of car production. China has about 25,000 new cars a day and 9 million new cars a year. In order for the United States to buy cars from China, they have to pass the test- degree of damage.

People's republic of Capitalism Part 2

Did you know that every year in China there is about 9 million more cars on the road than the previous year?! In China, there are so many accidents. They call the insurance company Liberty Mutual when they get in a car accident or even when someone scratches their car, because the insurance company with give them the money to fix their car without much investigation. Others in China will just settle it between themselves right there without going to court or call the insurance company. On the road, some people haven't even driven in there entire life. In the United States, people learn to drive as teenagers. In China, people are learning to drive in their 30s, 40s and 50s. In China, they make the highways by digging holes and doing it with a shovel. They find it easier that way. A man in China gets about 14 dollars a day for putting together dynamite through a mountain to make a tunnel for cars to go in and out. They work 11 hours a day, seven days a week. The people in China are building tunnels and roads as fast as people are making cars.

People's Republic of Capitalism

We watched more of the movie today. People in China think it is useless for girls to go to school. They believe that the women should marry into a rich family. A doctor in China works to find a cure for aids. His family lives in Maryland and pays 1/5th the amount to rent a lab in China and he gets 10x more space. The United States is dependent on China for their cheap prices and China is dependent on the United States to send them things. The women who has her child her boarding school wants to divorce him and get a job of her own rather than working at her farm.

People's Republic of Capitalism

We continued watching the film in class today. People in China get payed about 1/10th of what people in America got payed at the Briggs factory. Apple products were made and designed by people in China or America. If someone bought an Apple product in America, the Apple company would be making a profit of about eighty dollars. But the people in China make a profit of four dollars. China is known for making most of the stuff that we have here in America. Walmart makes more of a profit than the people in China in who actually make the goods. The people in China are getting paid about twenty dollars a week to make all the good that we have here. People in America are getting paid about twenty dollars an hour to do the most tedious jobs.

Economic Geography Video

In class we are starting the next unit which is economic geography. We are watching a movie called the Peoples Republic of China. China is being trained to compete in the marketing world. In China, the men make about three or four dollars a day. The women make about one or two dollars a day. A half of a million people in China work in the construction business. This one family in China makes about six hundred dollars a year and they chose to put their daughter in boarding school, which is half their pay check. In September 28, 2007, The Briggs company-where engines are made, in Missouri was shut down and built in China. So, the people in Missouri lost their job. A reason why they moved it to China so Asians could buy it and it would be inexpensive to make in China and for the United States to buy from them.

Today in Class.....

Today, Mr.Schick passed back our quizzes we recently took. We went over the answers and had to pronounce the leaders names which are really difficult. After that we spent about 10 mintues talking about our assembly tomorrow  If we stand up and ask a question he is going to give us 10 extra credit points! Gerry Sandusky is coming to John Carroll to speak about the challenges he has faced with his named being Gerry Sandusky like the man who was the Penn State coach, who was charged with being a petifile. The assembly should be really interesting and not boring! After that talk, we watched a few minutes of video based on our next unit.

Class on Friday!

In class on Friday we talked about the paper that was due on Monday. Mr.Schick explained what the format of the paper was going to have to be and what we needed to include in the paper. We than talked and watched a video about the bombing that was going on in Gaza. The fact that the bombing could have been worse an effected us just as much as 9/11 is really scary. But good thing nothing happened in the United States but it is still a little scary. Anything like that could get worse and worse and then get really really bad.

Class discussion about the Countries

Today we had the class that never ends. We reviewed all of the countries and talked about them more in depth.

Afghanistan- It is a British Empire. Afghanistan is not a really developed country. But they are the hardest country to invade, only the Native Americans know a way to get in.

Brazil- Brazil is a Portuguese empire before they were declared Independence. They have a very old government but a very stable government. They were colonized by an European nation.

They declared independence on August 19, 1919.

Not until 1747, Afghanistan was adapted from the Department of State Post Reports. The material has been added to increase coverage of minor cities. Other countries can dominate the Afghan situations but the United States can field between world powers, but they are not an appropriate target to conquer.

France

France doesn't have an official date that they declared independence.
They first written records for history of France appear in the Iron Age.

Germany

Germany declared Independence on January 18, 1871.
After the German Revolution of 1918-1919 and the military surrender in World War 1, the Empire was replaced bu the Weimar Republic in 1918, and some of its territory partitioned in the Treaty of Versailles.

More Countries!

United States

Declared independence on July 4, 1776

From the 1500s through the 1700s, they were settled and colonized by the Spanish, British, French, Dutch, Portuguese, and other European nations.  The original thirteen colonies were held by Great Britain until the Revolutionary War, after which they became the first thirteen states.  There are now 50 states in the United States.  The United States is considered the last true superpower, with the world's largest military and the world's largest economy.

Israel

Israel became an independent state on May 14, 1948

Following World War Two, the newly-formed United Nations drafted a treaty dividing up some of Palestine's land.  They established an independent Arab state and an independent Jewish state.  Many Jews emigrated to the new nation of Israel post WWII.  Creation of this new Jewish state was not universally accepted by Arabs, even though Israel was officially admitted to the UN on May 11, 1949.  There is still controversy surrounding Israel's very existence in the Middle East.

China

China's official date of independence is October 1, 1949.

China is one of the world's oldest civilizations.  As long ago as 221 BC, China was unified as a nation during the Qin dynasty.  They formed a republic on January 1, 1912.  The current Communist government, officially called the People's Republic of China, was formed in 1949.

(Thanks Mr.Schick)

Fun Class!

Today, we went over the magical quiz that we took on Friday. I expected a worse grade then I got so I was happy. Mr.Schick really likes the leader Hu Jintao! He also mentioned that we are going to have to write a 500 word essay which is not bad at all, about two leaders and their leader qualities. So, basically all we did during class was go over the test, learn how to pronounce the leaders names and joke around!

World Leaders

Today, we talked about the homework we did the other day about the the world leaders. We added on President Obama since he is the president of the United States again. We talked about his achievements and what makes him a person that is fit for the position. One thing I did not know about President Obama is that he taught as a professor at the University of Chicago Law School. We also talked more in depth about the other major world leaders.

President Barack Obama

President Obama graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School. He was the president of the Harvard Law Review. He worked as a civil right attorney and was a college professor at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. He was senator for Illinois for three terms. Now he is the president of the United States. He will be president for two terms.

*This is late because I was sick yesterday!*

Political Leaders Class

Today, we had a normal class. But we talked so much to the point where Mr.Schick got really annoyed. Anyways, we went over the assignment about the Political Leaders and made corrections. He told us not to really worry about what type of government but to focus mainly on the leaders. That is basically all we did today, nothing too major!

Today, Mr.Schick was not in class again, so we had a sub. She handed back our tests and we went over the answers. After we finished that, we were able to finish our assignment that we had to do on Friday. Some people already finished the assignment so they did other work.
